SELLING MY WARES BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD

Sam Walter Foss

House by the Side of the Road

public domain
There are hermit souls that live withdrawn
In the place of their self-content;
There are souls like stars, that dwell apart,
In a fellowless firmament;
There are pioneer souls that blaze the paths
Where highways never ran-
But let me live by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

Let me live in a house by the side of the road
Where the race of men go by-
The men who are good and the men who are bad,
As good and as bad as I.
I would not sit in the scorner's seat
Nor hurl the cynic's ban-
Let me live in a house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

I see from my house by the side of the road
By the side of the highway of life,
The men who press with the ardor of hope,
The men who are faint with the strife,
But I turn not away from their smiles and tears,
Both parts of an infinite plan-
Let me live in a house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

I know there are brook-gladdened meadows ahead,
And mountains of wearisome height;
That the road passes on through the long afternoon
And stretches away to the night.
And still I rejoice when the travelers rejoice
And weep with the strangers that moan,
Nor live in my house by the side of the road
Like a man who dwells alone.

Let me live in my house by the side of the road,
Where the race of men go by-
They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong,
Wise, foolish - so am I.
Then why should I sit in the scorner's seat,
Or hurl the cynic's ban?
Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man.

This poem came to mind as I was thinking about my weekend at the Dixie Highway Yard Sale.  We were there to sell our wares, of course, but there is so much more that goes on.  We meet really nice vendors who come from venues different than ours.  It was fascinating to meet the carver who uses a chain saw and huge logs to create replicas of nature's animals.

He is a down-to-earth, hard working man who has an extraordinary talent for carving with a chain saw.

His work has a lot of detail in it.

We were all set up in the parking lot of a small variety store called "Stuff 4 Less".  Another vendor-neighbor was selling Hematite jewelry.  He said some of his pieces were priceless.
He and his partner collect and prep the pieces and form them into necklaces, lanyards, key rings, etc.

During the Dixie Highway Yard Sale the store owner brings some of his wares out onto the front sidewalk.  This little store is owned by a couple and their daughter.  Truly a Mom and Pop operation.  Some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet.

It is always nice to have a food vendor close by.  Vonna and Doug have just set up their Food Stand in this little out building.  Last year they were set up on the parking lot with a tent and a grill.  They serve some of the best Fried Bologna Sandwiches you have ever tasted.

Of course, we were there with our fourteen tables of collectibles, toys, sporting goods, etc.  This year we did have a specialty item that gained the attention of a lot of shoppers before they were sold.

Yes, these are fox furs complete with heads, tails, and paws.  Many people tried them on but our favorite model was this man.

He and his wife are from Iowa and they are currently in this area working at a Youth Camp on Lookout Mountain.  This is John and Judy and they are chaplains with Christian Resort Ministries.  They travel from state to state in their RV and serve as counselors for Youth Camps.

The item that was most fascinating for the young kids was this pink guitar.

This is Cheyenne and she is a beauty pageant winner.  A lefty playing a pink guitar.

I believe the guitar went home with this little doll!

Of course, there was a love story here too.  This man is a retired New York City Firefighter.  He had lived in Chattanooga, TN about 40 years ago and had met a neat lady while there.

At the end of his tour  he went home to New Jersey and became a NY Firefighter.  He retired a couple of years ago and decided to try to re-connect with some of his Southern friends.  After a couple of calls he learned that his lady love of the past was still here.  He left word that he would like to hear from her.  In a day or two she called him and invited him to come down for a visit.  He came and stayed a week.  He returned to Jersey and in a couple months he came back and visited for two weeks.  He returned to Jersey.  A few months later he came back and stayed for THREE weeks.  When he went back to Jersey this time, he packed up his belongings and came back to the South to stay!  His friend and he are enjoying their new life together.

My DH and I have a soft spot in our hearts for kids.  At every sale we meet a young person, usually a young guy, who just clicks with us.  This sale was no exception.  We met Zach last year and got to know him a little bit.  This year Zach is 16 and working for the owner of this little store helping with various chores.  He was in and out of our booth all three days. He was a delight for us to chat with and get his take on life.  He says "People should be good to other people."  This comment was made when he observed some adults behaving rudely.

He bought this rip stick and was trying to learn to ride it in the parking lot.  He came to us looking for pads and a helmet.

"Let me sell my wares by the side of the road and be a friend to man".  We meet some of the nicest people along the way.  Every one has a story.  I have shared a little of our story with you today.

Ever since I told my DH that I would help with the big Yard Sales I have enjoyed visiting with the customers, watching the cute little children, and meeting lots of dogs.  For me, it is about the people.  That is what makes all of this hard work fun!!!!

It is back to the Studio for me this week and preparing for a visit from one of our grandsons.  The next big Yard Sale for us is in August.  We will set up at the Highway 127 Longest Yard Sale.  Another week of meeting new friends "on the side of the road".

TIME TO FINISH IT

The other day was time to clean up the studio.  It was a really big mess from several projects I had completed.  I started to straighten out the fabrics on the shelves and discovered that I was constantly re-arranging plastic bins, tubs, and boxes.
The time had come!!!  Get these boxes sorted out and stacked together so I could see just how many WIPs (Works in Progress) I truly had.  This is certainly not ALL of the WIPs, but I could not safely stack anymore.

Okay, let's get a system here.  I decided to list these projects in a binder with a little information about how much was completed/started on each project.

This is about 15 projects.  Some would take an hour or so to complete and some will take a week or two.
I have made these lists before and I am bored with the list making.  June is the mid-way point of the year and a good time to settle down and finish off some things before the New Year.
I don't know if I will finish all of these, but I certainly want to see the stack go down.  We will keep tabs on it each month.
After getting the list in the binder I needed a way to get myself to complete a project.  Maybe I could get someone else involved.

A few of my friends are in guilds that have a UFO/WIP challenge.  I am not in one of those guilds.
The next best thing was to ask my DH to help with this.
I made little slips of paper with the corresponding number of the project in the binder and folded and put them in a little bowl.  You will notice that I am using recycled paper so there is printing on one side and I could write the numbers on the other side.

I explained this to my DH and told him that he would draw one number out of the bowl for me on the last day of each month until I had completed this stack of WIPs.  If I finished something in a day or two we would then draw another project for the same month.

So yesterday was the last day of May and he drew the number for me.   I started laughing when I opened it and saw what number it was:
No better place to start than with the number 1!  So I looked back at the list and found that the project #1 is Dresden Plate.
I started this project with a friend of mine 2 summers ago because she wanted to learn how to do machine applique and she chose the Dresden Plate.  She and I met several times and sewed together as I taught her how to do the applique, etc.  She caught on quickly and did not need me anymore.  She went on to complete her project and mine stayed in the plastic box.  I have several blocks completed, but still have many to go.

The WIP for June is Dresden Plate:

I will keep you posted on my progress this month.

This will not be the only project I am working on.  There are always other things that get mixed in too.  The goal is to make sure this one is completed by the end of the month.

Stay tuned . . .

MY SISTER

My sister gives me lots of neat gifts.  She sent me this card a few years ago and I took it apart and framed it for my studio.  It sums up how I feel about my art/quilting.

She came for a visit this weekend and once more brought me a cute gift.  These little yo-yos make the cutest push pins for my tack board.

Another neat gift was this framed puzzle with the cat and the quilts.  This cat looks like my KeeKee.

She had her friend, Cathy, cross stitch this beautiful piece for my studio.  Doesn't this just say it all?

I could continue showing my gifts but I want to tell you about our "Sisters' Weekend".
She arrived on Thursday in time to meet me for lunch.  Afterwards we had an afternoon of chatting before we headed out to my Greatful Threads Guild Meeting.  This is a guild of art quilters.  We thoroughly enjoyed all of the Show and Tell projects, but the real fun came when Denise offered the program.  We were invited to make a cute example of painting on fabric.  First, Denise showed us some examples and gave us some instruction on possible ways to do the project.  We were working on small squares of fabric.
Right here I need to point out that my sister is not a quilter.  Not a quilter of any kind!  She is a talented musician, writer, and composer.  She was a really good sport about going to this meeting and trying this project with me.
Now let the fun begin.  We chose our patterns and picked out our supplies.   Of course, Gigi chose a cat and I chose a frog.
This is Gigi getting the low-down.
Of course, we have to get tickled.  It is no fun if we aren't making fun of ourselves and each other as we demonstrate our "creativity".
Do you want to see what we have to show for the evening?  Get ready, here they come . . .
This is Gigi's cat, Tallulah!

My frog, Croaker, on his lily pad.

No Sisters' Weekend is complete unless we do some shopping at the Antique stores and Architectural Exchange.
First a little browsing . . .
"It" has to be here somewhere.

Do you think this corbel will make a nice towel holder for my newly updated bath?

We found a few more things and moved on to check other places and other things.

Loved this pillow. . .

Had a great lunch at Niedlov's Bakery.

The rest of our visit was spent chatting and relaxing.  It was sad to see her leave, but there will be a next time.

ANTIQUE ALLEY YARD SALE 2012

Lots of people enjoy going to a neighborhood yard sale or chasing down yard sales in their part of town for a Saturday outing.  These are always fun and are usually the "leftovers" from some one's Spring cleaning or a downsize or just needing to "get rid of some stuff".  My husband and I have done our share of these sales too.

These days when the words "Yard Sale" are spoken at my house it means something entirely different. About 4 years ago, my DH decided he would like to do some Saturday Flea Markets around our area. These started out as small sales and now have grown into a very fun, busy Saturday Sale-a-Thon once or twice a month.  He loved doing it and meeting people so he started looking around for ways to collect "inventory".  It was impossible for us to have enough of our own stuff to re-sell.  He would go to Estate Sales and neighborhood yard sales looking for things he thought he could re-sell.

After a couple of years he invited me to come along and help him a little.  He began to train me to be his "assistant yard seller".  Now I travel with him for the three major Yard Sales:  Highway 11 Antique Alley; Highway 41 Dixie Highway Sale; and Highway 127 Longest Yard Sale. He builds inventory year round and we load up our treasures and head out to the "BIG" sales.

This past weekend was the Highway 11 Antique Alley Sale and we had a spot in McDonald, TN located between Ooltewah and Cleveland, TN.

Here is what it looks like when we finally get unloaded and put all the "stuff" out onto the tables in the boxes.  This is when it looks like a big mess.
Then we separate it into categories on the tables.

Housewares Department

Camping Supplies

Collectible Knick Knacks
Sporting Goods

Glassware and Bottles
Toys and Collectibles

More bottles

Now it is time to look around and see who our "neighbors" are.  Many of the vendors set up with the tents and their tables.
These two ladies had clothes and furniture among their wares.

Some vendors have special "selling" caps they wear no matter what the season.

The vendor on the left is our resident "electronics guru" with his wares.

DH is helping a customer choose the perfect guitar!

These three friends are enjoying their annual "road trip" to buy.

We had good crowds, great weather, and lots of fun.

When it is over and done with, we must load up the tables and gather up the empty boxes and head home to get ready for the next time.

One very tired DH who is happy with his weekend of Yard Selling!
